just come back from an hours worth of sledging with daughter for the umpteenth time this year and yet again we have used a wheelie bin lid , they are great , room enough for 2 of you and they slide well , perhaps not good enough for the olympics but .

what does anybody else use ??

Big inflated inner tube thing, a sheet of polythene (v fast, almost scary so!) and yes, a sledge.

I bet you could make a really fast sledge using old skis as runners

My brother found one of those traditional wooden toboggans with metal shod runners at a Church jumble sale. He paid a tenner for it and gave it to my kids the next Christmas. It flies!

As a kid my mates and I would use lengths of old conveyor belt from the local coal mine. Cut to length and folded back on it's self they were great! They could also be used for sliding down a wet slag heap!

I've used trays before now and plastic bags full of snow.... but bought plastic sledge's on Thursday and got to try them out in Rugby on Friday. Though there seems to be a serious lack of hills around there - which was fine as we were with cousins of 1 and 4 so gentle slope was fine. But it was the first time I realised that there is an advantage to living in a hilly place. The cousins had a home made wooden sledge with metal runners which was fine ... but lacked sides and holding places for the smaller children.

Warning - whatever you do, don't use a large metal tea tray. I did that once and damn near killed myself! They have no brakes or sense of direction and stopping them with one's feet when at speed is virtually impossible. They also reach a terrifying speed very fast!

Yep I've got one of those.

My Bro-in-law (being a bit of a nutter) was towed behind a car whilst sitting on the bonnet of a mini. Fortunately the towing car didn't have to brake suddenly..............

We have modern plastic ones, and my technique is to lie down and go headfirst. Only crash/bruising I had in recent sledging was on a friend's wooden jobby... unstable and lethal for proper downhill mayhem imho, ... fine for tootling your toddler round the park and looking twee, I guess.

Most ingenious I saw recently was bin bag full of snow (sit on it and hold onto the neck, which you pull up between your legs (missus).

And five guys in a large rubber dinghy. Which was hilarious. ;)
