What does, 'rooted' mean.....

And some apps apparently will not run on rooted devices, iPlayer, for example.

It seems iplayer downloads doesn't work on the Samsung Tab 3 either at the moment.
Doesn't run on mum's 10inch model though runs fine on my substantially less expensive Hudl!
