What does the "@" do ?

I see people typing @<username> throughout threads .. what does it mean and what does it do ? Do these people get a notification somehow ?

You get an alert (top right hand side of the page) whenever anyone tags you in a thread @cisamcgu

You should see a red flag with at least the number four in it by now

Actually my username has nothing to do with CSI, rather it is the same as my username at work - I'm a simple chap and cannot remember more than one thing at a time.
