2 x cable ties. A buff is useful in Spring and Autumn as the weather can change between morning and evening commutes.

The above stuff is all good but regular maintenance and early retirement of worn out parts means you avoid most mechanicals. If you become lazy and put off work it often gets you on a cold wet winter's ride far from home.

Nothing. Too much weight.

I jest...but I see cyclists in the middle of nowhere that look to be carrying just that - OK maybe a tube and some CO2 secreted somewhere between 3 jelly babies but nothing more.

Me, my cycling career started with a clunker that was literally falling to bits, so I had a 12" plastic cantilever tool box bungeed to my rack wherever I went...never knew what I'd need next! I wonder why my 1st 4 jobs were all in bike workshops....I still struggle keeping it down to a Tom-Tool, tube & pump

Commuting:

Clean shirt and underwear
Small pump
Two bike locks
spare batteries along with USB charger - soon to be removed as it gets lighter
Small bag with two spare tubes, three tyre levers, patches, allen keys, pad and pencil
Pack up.
Phone and wallet.

All in a rucksack.

If I go for a weekend ride on the hybrid then all of the above except the batteries, pack up and clean clothes

If on the road bike, I have the same as the small bag but with a co2 pump in it and the multi tool - really should move the multi tool to the rucksack.

Multi tool
Chain link extractor and a couple of power links
Spare inner tube and repair kit.
A pump (I'm from Yorkshire - we don't use these fancy schmancy CO2 things  )
A few cable ties
Spoke key
