Four or so years ago on here it was recommended I buy a Samsung laptop and it was brilliant but today it has just bit the dust, so in a few hours I'm going out to replace it. What should I get, we have a couple of tablets a kindle HDX and an old iPad 2 so I think we will get another laptop but which one and not massively expensive. Budget 500 ish maybe they have definitely come down in price.

My only advice would be to buy one with a fast processor, ideally i5 or above.

I assume that the hard disk drive packed up? Why not just replace that and save yourself a lot of money?

PS If you decide to do that, consider an SSD (Solid-State Drive). I just put one in my laptop and it is much quicker. It also has the benefit of being shock-proof because it does not have the fragile moving parts of a standard disk drive.

£500 will get you a quick i5. Look for 8gb ram and 500gb plus hdd.

Not moved to SSD on our laptops as both boot fast anyway. The SSD on my son's gaming rig is seriously quick considering all the background programmes that run.

Any reason the old lappy has died. Most likely HDD failure. Cheap fix

No idea but we're moving abroad next year and intended to get a new one so now seems like the right time. Thanks for the advice. What is SSD?

The majority of the time it is either the hard drive that has failed (easy cheap fix) or the cooling "radiator" has become clogged with dust causing the gpu / cpu to overheat and complete failure of the motherboard. I would recommend anyone who owns / uses a laptop to periodically have it stripped and serviced to remove offending dust and replenish thermal compound as this effectively increase the life of the laptop by years. I would recommend Lenovo as a quality value for money brand.

Read the post before fossy's! :okay:

An SSD is basically a device containing a load of memory chips with a sophisticated controller built in to make it a plug-in replacement for an old-fashioned hard disk drive (HDD). HDDs are much quicker than they used to be, but SSDs can be significantly quicker.

Unlike relatively delicate HDDs, SSDs are completely immune to damage due to being knocked when in use. I warned my niece about the HDD issue but she used to close the lid of her laptop and shove it away from her while the HDD was still whirring away. She killed it that way a few days later after ignoring my advice ...

The one catch at the moment is that SSD storage is much more expensive than HDD storage. If you want TBs of capacity (thousands of GBs) for lots of media files, then you would probably have to stick to HDDs until SSDs become cheaper.

I only needed a 128 GB SSD and that cost me under £50.

SSDs do have a limited life, the way they work means that they gradually lose capacity over time. They are designed to cope with that to a certain extent but they will not last as long as a cared for hard disk.

Lenovo have been in a bit of trouble recently for putting software on their machine that can be used to monetise their customers. You could call it spyware. And my wife's & daughter's Lenovos were forever losing screws from the bottom of the case.

Think about what you want the machine for, if you're only using the internet and writing letters you don't need as fast a machine as you'd need for graphic manipulation.

As others have said, it depends how your old machine died. If the hard disk was getting a bit dodgy you could revive it and get your data off using something like this. I've used it on a number of machines and while it may take a while it is certainly effective.

BTW, my wife bought an HP to replace the Lenovo.

I bought the Lenovo Z50 intel i7 16gb ram with the 4gb nvidia laptop. It had a removal instructions for Superfish should i find it installed, but it was clear i'm glad to say, but good laptop and fast, Works well with World of Warplanes full hd lol
