What should I do if I think I have found a dumped bike?

I past a bike propped up by a wall on my way to visit friends... and 3 hours later its still there.

Now where it is isn't outside anyone's house ... it has a lock wrapped around the seat post but not locked to anything or imobilizing the bike. The back wheel is flat and possibly the pannier has been abused so that it is fouling on the back wheel.

Its not an expensive bike Sun GT10? but it looks as though someone loved it... wheels decorated with ribbons.

What should I do with it... (I've left it where it is but just moved it behind the wall so that if the owner knows where it is they can find it but that the general public won't see it straight away.)

Report it to Polis and advise them that you will be wheeling home and that they can come and get it if they like. After a certain time, if it remains unclaimed, ownership reverts to you.

Take it to the Police, get a piece of paper. In a month go back and claim it, assuming you want it.

What do you do about abandoned, chained-up bikes? Is that a matter for the council to deal with?

Someone locked up two MTBs to the railings down beside the Water of Leith opposite my flat three months ago and they've never moved since.

I can't understand people who lock up and abandon perfectly good bikes; if they're that keen to get rid of them, why not give them to a charity like the Bike Station?

I was in Brighton just before Christmas. There seem to be hundreds of abandoned chained up bikes, where ever you look. The local council have just started putting notices on them saying they are going to be removed, if not claimed. I expect you could get some bolt croppers and get yourself a bike, cause I can't see any of these being claimed. Although most of them are BSOs and fairly rusty.

What happened with this Summerdays?

I ask as when cycling along today I spotted a bike which appeared abandoned in some trees/greenery. It only looked like a cheapo mountain bike and was missing some bits.

I really wanted to bring it home, but left it where it was and reported it to the local police in case it was stolen (we've had a large number of garage break-ins around this area). They've logged my call and are sending someone to take a look.
I've expressed an interest to the police to have it (much to my gf's annoyance at having *another* bike lying around).
I've also emailed the local neighbourhood beat team to reiterate my interest.
Would be interested to know how the process works.

Thanks,

Any update on this bike.
