What to do if tailgated

Use your windscreen washers, it really does work, got that tip on a recent advanced driving course, some morons take 2 or 3 goes to get the message. Braking or switching on lights is dangerous and is likely to annoy the tailgater and may lead to even more aggressive driving or conflict.

Usually I know they'r ethere because I keep a close eye on the mirrors, but it always amazes me that they expect to be able to intimidate me out of the way by driving six feet from the trailer bumper. You go for it mate, if I need to stop suddenly I'm 60 feet away from you and I probably won't even notice the bump.

I've been fancying an old landrover for some time now based on the assumption that i'd have the option of just braking and letting them hit me or to not brake when cut up and just give a little nudge

but then i remember that i'm sensible and the above actions could cause injury and are thus irresponsible.

Chances are you wouldn't. An old delivery driver at a place I used to work was involved in such a crash many years back and he didn't know the driver was there, and neither did he feel the bump. He continued to drive for half a mile before someone flagged him down.

I just slow right down, 4 or 5 mph is not uncommon for me when being tailgated, especially enjoyable if the numpty has no space to pass.

Yes, he's hardly going to think "goodness me! He's right! I am a great big self-gratification artist! I'd better back off a bit!"

Oh, I wouldn't do it deliberately, that would be very silly. But equally, if I need to brake, I'll brake, and if someone's too close to me that's their problem.

Yes, I slow right down and sometimes use my left foot to feather the brake pedal in these cases. Sometimes they get the hint, most of the time it makes no difference.

I notice a lot of people right up the arse of HGV's lately, could they be drafting to get better fuel economy out of their own vehicles I wonder?

It does work, usually.

It worked especially well once when there was a slaphead in an open top SAAB. After the third soaking he dropped back.
