Leave it in the front garden, it will be gone by morning where we live.

Gas fitters do get nervous around second hand items with no known history as they have to certify all their work.

Assuming it's been serviced, there should be a label or series of labels saying that it's been checked on a regular basis.

Going off topic slightly (please forgive me) you'll love your log burner. I collect wood from around the neighbourhood during the year, and by Winter I've enough free carbon neutral fuel to last until spring. One of my neighbours had new fences and the old boy smashed the 18 old fence panels into small pieces under a foot long and bagged them up for me. That alone is going to last me two winters.

Free heat = great feeling of smugness.
