What was the first linux distro you used?

For me it would be Knoppix. I can't remember how long ago it was - early 2000's? - and I can still remember the trepidation of booting up from cd for the first time and wondering what the heck was going on!

Whatever version of Slackware was current in 1993

Before that I was using FreeBSD. There was a version around 1991/2 that fitted on 10 floppy disks

Also I knew Alan Cox (vaguely, friend of a friend, had a lift in his car once ) before he did Linux

I now use Ubuntu and sometimes Gentoo

'bout the same time I got into it. Autumn 1993, Kernel 0.99pl12 or so.

But I switched to MCC not long after, and then rebuilt my whole system from source, and then didn't actually use a prepackaged distro again until about 1996 when it became clear that rolling my own was incompatible with the requirements of having a full-time job

SCO Xenix V - around 1986, then upgraded to SCO Unix a few years later. Currently using Debian (lenny) on the CC server.

SuSe 8 I think, but I've never really got to grips with any distro yet.

Ubuntu's latest netbook offering may be getting installed on my netbook soon though as that seems simple and quick to use

Debian Etch - for my home server. It was recommended to me as a tool to allow me to get familiar with Linux without burning fingers too much. Generally it's been a good experience with Samba shares and a couple of media server applications running on a dual core Atom looking after 8TB if hard disc space. To make it more "interesting" I did not install a GUI, so command line only.
