Got to take our eldest up to uni so we thought we might make a w'end of it & have a pootle around. Looking at airbnb and can't decide whether to stay right in the centre and concentrate on checking out Sheffield itself or somewhere a bit out in the country and explore the district. Anyone know that part of the world & have any thoughts?

Sheffield city centre's not got that much going for it tbh. Your best bet, especially in this nice weather, is to get out into the Peak District. Some great cycling to be had round here although I'm guessing you're not bringing bikes. What sort of things do you enjoy?

Definitely head west a bit to the peak district. Lots of great walks and rides. Hunt something out round Hathersage.

I suppose we could fling a couple of bikes in the boot. 'Er indores isn't the keenest cyclist in truth, but I suppose she might be persuadable. Worth a try. Thanks for the thought.

Excellent. That's the kind of thing. Walk or cycle, one way or another I think that's probably the way to go. Especially if the city centre's not up to much.
Get the train to Manchester.
We weren't really looking for rain.
Go watch the Blades
I support QPR. That's bad enough thanks.

Local here!

I like the city centre, though it is monopolised by chains, there are a few independants worth seeking out. Alot of the good independants are not quite in the city centre, but in the surrounding subburbs. Mexican Street food chef is near the station and a big hit with us, but its definitely no frills!

Saddo's that we are, me and the OH have stayed in St Pauls hotel in the city centre a few times - nice pool/spa but no jaccuzzi. We've also staye at the Hilton which is in the canal basin. Despite the best efforts of the council to make it pretty, the canal basin is a bit desrted, but you can have a nice walk along the canal or river from ther if a bit of industrial heritage/nature fusion is your thing.

If you're going to take bikes I recommend driving out to the high peak trail, start at Middleton top, cycle approx twelve miles to the fab pub and then ride back - it's beautiful. We've done tissington and monsal trails, but in my view they're not as stunning as the high peak. Monsal trail is also usually very busy.

I've been to Castleton this morning, and I'm working this afternoon. I'll probably cut the grass tomorrow. Why do you ask?

Meadowhall for the wife if she likes a bit of retail, whilst you should pop into PlanetX.

Visit sheffield's many parks (and no I don't mean just the ones on the West side of the city). The good parks were spread all around the city.

Shepherd's Wheel, Abbeydale Industrial hamlet, Damflask and above reservoirs, Strines, Wincobank Fort remains, Norfolk Park, Concorde Park, Graves Park, The Botanical Gardens, Rother Valley Country Park, Wombwell, Wentworth grounds, Chatsworth Grounds, Longshaw estate, Padley Gorge. Kelham Island and surrounding pubs and microbreweries. Those are just the ones off the top of my head.

But don't expect Planet X to have what you want in stock. The showroom is lovely, but the emphasis is on 'show' - well worth a look, but if you specifically want something, order it on click and collect a few days beforehand.

Form a pop group, write some songs, have a USP (haircuts are a good one), sign to a major record label (do they still have those?), you know, the regular stuff people do in Sheffield.
