i would be haveing a seiriouse word with myself, asking 1 why i noticed 2 why i care, 3 what am i missing in life

I'm gonna take a wild guess for number's one and two...

"Because I hate fare dodging and the fact that we have to contribute to London Underground's cost of combatting it on top of the substantial cost of public transport."

What are you missing in life?

What is an oystercard? Is it a Jewish thing?!

Oy vey ...
Hmmm.... we really ought to 'report' you for that.
Ah well.

Let's put it this way. Your avatar suggests to me one of two things.
1. You've just swallowed your Oystercard (and realised it isn't Kosher).
2. You've just had a rather 'Jewish' thing done to you - without anaesthetic.
Which was it?

does diliberately choosing to pay on the train instead of at the ticket office, on the off chance that the inspector might not come round (which has happened a few times) count as fare dogding or fair play?

Fare dodging. Well, nowadays it does, hence all those stern warnings about penalty fares. And they mean it!

Back in the days of Eurorail cards that worked all over Europe (with the sole exception of the UK) a mate of mine managed to get from London to Yugoslavia on a one month 3 zone British Transport pass.

How do you know I'm not Jewish? ;)

Anyway, the answer is "both" ...
