Whatever happened to "Gold discs" etc?

The time was that "Gold" and "Platinum" discs for record sales were a big thing ("Silver" never was as that was awarded for yer family buying the song) and "artistes" and record companies gave a shoot...

Do these "awards" still exist?

I know this is OT, but I have a vague recollection that I used to buy bubble gum in the shape of an LP. The LP/bubble gum cover was a miniture version of the original LP cover, along with (I think) lyrics of one of the songs printed on the cover. I'm sure I had an ABBA bubble gum once.

Tell me I wasn't imagining all this...

These days to get to No1, if there is still such a thing, you probably only have to sell a couple of dozen singles, that's if they still make them.

Hope my insightful knowledge is of assistance!

these days you don't even need to release a single to get in the charts... a handful of downloads from itunes will do the trick.

regarding gold discs... No idea if they still award them, but I always wanted one. Imagine having Bat Out Of Hell on a gold disc... pretty cool huh? The down side is, it's not Bat Out of Hell on a gold disc, it's any old disc sprayed gold with the Bat Out of Hell sticker in the middle. When I heard that's what they do, i lost interest.

The do still exist, just.
However as they were for selling CD's/LP's etc the only people they buy music 'hardware' are the older generation.
Many of today's teenagers, who are the traditional big buyers of music, no longer own a single CD, it's all downloads.

Therefore the biggest selling artist in the UK last year was Aled Jones, followed by Tom Jones and Charlotte Church.
The Army choir did pretty well over Christmas.

But even Aled can't push a million actual CD's any more.

A gold disc was awarded to 1 million sellers.

That's long been a thing of the past.

IIRC they actually down graded it from 1 million to 100,000 (or such) a while back, simply because sales had slumped so far. The benefit of all the piracy of course is that bands have had to get back on the road and do stacks of live stuff to make money. Great for the ordinary punter like me who enjoys a bit of moshing.
