  • It's not the cold
  • It's not the walk from the main roads to my work in cycling shoes, on solid sheet ice
  • It's not having to be on the MTB with a rucksack
  • It's not my goggles steaming up at every traffic light

It's the bloody cars which are NOT abandoned, stiuck, broken down or otherwise stricken, parking all along the bus lane because apparently, judging by the lack of enforcement on roads that normally have a keen patrol at rush hour, laws are only enforcable in fair weather, which means me, other cyclists, taxis and 432 others (going on the 6 72-seater buses) can't get through

My parents live just off a main road (bus route) as the weather got worse more and more cars appeared it didn't look like there was anything wrong with them and most of them were clear of snow, after a few days we realised (as the same cars dissappeared and reappeared at night that it was folk parking there rather an in their housing estate; it got worse over the weekend when they were there all day.

I don't think the problem is lack of enforcement, because I think enforcement of people parking legally (even on the highway) is going to be quite difficult when the road markings can't be seen. And I know people who blatantly park in bus lanes they know to exist are taking the pee somewhat, but I can see the problem from the other side as well.

I think the problem is the old social blinkers, where people don't seem to think about anyone else apart from themselves. It'll be difficult getting out tomorrow, I'll park on the road. They wouldn't consider doing it in fair weather otherwise.

In order to keep my sanity, the view I take is that nobody else is going to be prepared for crappy weather, so I'm going to be prepared for them turning it into the worst experience on the road. That has meant driving on some occasions when I would have cycled, and taking extra provisions on longer trips in case of getting stuck.

EDIT: Apologies if that sounds excessively like I'm blowing my own trumpet
