It's obviously a mileage log of some kind, but what does it mean? Does it mean the poster has done 40 miles in total or that his longest single journey is 40 miles?

I took it off Gazmercer's post, and all numbers to 40 had been crossed off.

Gazmercer has done a ride 40 miles long. His next target is to do one 50 miles long (or longer). So his longest single journey is 40 miles to date.

Makes me feel a bit inadequate sometimes when I see these 50 - 60 - 100 mile records. My longest single ride is about 30 miles, I think.

EDIT - I just measured what I think is my longest single ride, never bothered to measure it before. 40 miles, just over so not as bad as I thought. ;)

I very rarely bother to measure distances at all. I'm happier that way. I know how long it took me to cycle from Swindon to Ledbury, for example, but the actual distance? 50 miles? 60? What's important is that I enjoyed it.

further than you've ever ridden is always daunting until you ride and wonder what the fuss was about, the time becomes the issue rather than the distance, if the bike fits and you eat/drink right you just keep on going

As long as you're on the bike & enjoying your self that's the important thing, for some people we want to do more than just going with what we know. I spent years never going over 50 miles in one day & was perfectly fine with that but now I want to do the longer rides to challenge my self. The result is I'm tracking my longest ride because I want something to aim for.
