Wheel Woes

Well, yet again I'm stood by the side of the road waiting to be picked up because of my Fulcrum Racing Quattro's.

Other than the seized front bearing I do think most of the problems stem from when my mech hanger snapped sending the mech into the rear and wrecking 6 spokes. But this is my second snapped spoke and I'm starting to think either the wheels are cr"p or at least I'm too heavy for them (100kg plus bike) or a bit of both.

Can anyone give some recommendations for wheelsets under £500 (ideally under £400) that cope with bigger riders? I do mainly rolling terrain but do do some proper hilly sportives as well. Need to be shim/SRAM 11spd compatible. I've just had a look at Zipp 30's which seem to tick the boxes (c.110kg+ max weight!) and I know the Mavic Krysium range are well regarded.

I think mentally I'll struggle to go for another set of Fulcrums though.

Actually just realised the price I saw for the Zipp 30 was just one wheel :-)

Generally, in this situation people suggest handbuilt rather than factory. Talk to your LBS

i have campag zondas on the one bike and zipp 202's on the other and i weigh over the 100kg mark - never broke a spoke in 3yrs of riding

I was pointed to DCR wheels (http://dcrwheels.co.uk) when I was looking, nice guy to deal with and the set for my Synapse came out at £368 if I remember rightly (delivery is a tenner more but I collected.) he will talk to you about usage and your weight when looking at options. Equally cyclechat has a wheel building member who a lot of people have used and does good work by all accounts, could be an option.

Great thanks! I'm definitely leaning towards the idea of custom/handbuilt. For one thing it sounds cool having custom made wheels :-) And in all seriousness they do seem like a decent option cost wise.

Got quotes from Strada and PT Cycles, will have a look at DCR. I will also have a word with the LBS as I know he has a guy do a lot of hiw wheel work for him so maybe he also makes wheels.
