wheelbuilding: rims

Can you recommend some rims for a first-time builder? I'm no heavier than 85kg and only ride on the road.

Based upon the revered Sheldon Brown's recommendation, I'm after 15mm rims as I use tyres between 23mm and 28mm.

As they're for a vintage bike, black ones with go-faster logos are out.

Open Pro or Open Sport (if you can get black in Sports).

Rigida Chrina are nice and sturdy without being too heavy.

It depends on your priorities.

I was leaning towards the Rigida Chrina, but my wheelbuilder suggested Ridiga DPX - said they were deeper so more rigid (better for a heavier rider like me)

Not been disappointed.

I love CXP33's but they are a bit to modern for the build. Not too deep though, but aero profile.

Open Pros or Ambrosio Excellence (if you can find them in silver) don't look too bad on a vintage bike. Tou can always take the stickers off.

As a first time builder you'll find double-eyeletted rims easiest. Losing nipples in the "box-section" of non-eyeletted or single-eyeletted rims is just no fun at all.

I'm not going to get too up tight about the whole vintage thing: it is first and foremost a "working" bike rather than a concours restoration.

Probably best to concentrate on making round wheels first...

Rebuilt the front on my commuter a few weeks ago with a Rigida Flyer from Parkers.

I was a pretty easy build and no problems so far.
