There I was minding my own business listening to my wife telling me about a cycle tour that some friends of ours had planned from St Malo into Brittany and how we ought to go somewhere together when I retire. I was a bit taken aback as she'd never shown any interest in cycling and even less interest in camping so I innocently asked her what she had in mind.

"Oh, somewhere exotic in the Southern hemisphere, hire a camper van or use motels/hotels for a month or two", she said.

I might retire sooner than I'd planned......

You'd be grey nomads

Mrs R suggested a couple of years ago that we should take a year off and tour round Australia in a camper van. She had an idea that she'd do some locum clinics to earn our keep....and I'll sit in the sun and chill.

WTF did you do in a previous life wocky to deserve a woman like the one you have got ........... you lucky B******* ^_^

A writer in the Grauniad for a bit concerned for his Grey Nomad 74yo mum off motorhoming in the south of France when he hadn't heard from her for a while, so flew over and went to the last campsite she'd been at and then followed her trail. Found her sitting in a field with a bunch of others of a similar age, all pissed on cheap red wine. He coined the term Saga Louts.

Your wife has acquired a new found desire to take you to a secluded place in the Southern Hemisphere, miles from anywhere

Either your retirement has inspired a romantic streak ...or she has just checked your lump sum and life insurance details!

Just remember that if it's the middle of the Australian Summer, you'll be sitting in the sun but not chilling!
There seems to be several assumptions that the Southern hemisphere only has Australia in it as a destination.....
Agreed, I've heard New Zealand is nice for cycle-touring also, and of course there's the South American countries.
