I am seriously considering getting a tablet to use in the lounge when I cannot be bothered to fire up my laptop (which is in for repair at the moment). It is only for surfing sites like this one and Facebook and a couple of other networking sites, plus Ebay and the such like. What I want to ask is, is all I have to do buy a tablet, fire it up, hook into my wireless network at home and surf away, or is it more complicated than that. Can I use it anywhere there is a free wifi signal, although mostly it will be at home. I see them advertised with comments like "12 months free internet access" so do I need to sign up to a provider as with mobile phones, and insert a SIM, or is that not necessary. We already have Virgin at home with wireless that I use for my laptop.

A lot to cover I appreciate, so if anyone could point me to a decent website that explains it all I would be grateful.

Thanks.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Basically yes. That is all you have to do. If you have WI FI from BT then you can hook up to there WI FI hotspots of which there are a lot all around the country. It is easy to get started. Open the box and basically log in using the passwords that you use now. The only thing you have to decide is what size of tablet to buy.

I recently bought a tablet for the same reason you mention---It really is as easy as you hope.
And loads of places with wifi--pubs, macDs etc

Just log into to your wireless with your tablet and away you go.
It's as simple as that.

I'm an old technophobe, but here I am sitting in my living room posting from my Kindle Fire HD.. I have one of those BT wireless hub things which provides the necessary internet access. It was simple to set up, and an impressive piece of kit for the price.

Don't bother with the rip off ones that come with a mobile sim. Just get a wifi tablet. You can link them to your phone if stuck, but I find most pubs and general places offer cloud wifi, it's free.

The family use tablets at home now, and I use an iPad with work, but have switched the sim off as I am always near wifi.

Great for web stuff.

The laptops and PCs are for homework mainly or indeed used to type up with a tablet in hand doing research.

We have an iPad2 which is my work one. It's easy to type on as it's 10 inch. I wouldn't pay the 400 for it though.

We also have a Samsung tab2 7" and that's great but a little trickier to type on for fudge fingers like me.
But it's better for movies as the screen is wide rather than the iPads 4:3. And the sound is much better for a £120 device.

Cracking bits of kit though. Not convinced of the Apple stuff. I am Android fan, and have Android phones in the family and a tablet.

Apple stuff works well to. Kids unfortunately just want brand, and don't realise they aren't so tied with Android.

Thanks everyone for the information. It is all stored away. Unfortunately my tablet will have to go on a back burner for a while as I need a new rear wheel for my hybrid!
