there seems to have been a trend of shrinking chamois pads over the past 20 years with some male pads now looking more like female ones! Anyone know which brands still use good size pads? I know Assos did until this year but even their new models have smallish pads now.

I like that nappy feeling!

Pearl Izumi and Gore have decent size pads on their women's shorts

Go to a multi brand shop and try some on?

just stocked up on last years Assos before they sell out (which will be very soon). I should be good for the next 5 years now! Not sure why Assos have changed their pads so much as their shorts were rated highly. I have seen some reviews of their new range and the reviews are generally quite poor; 'If it ain't bust don't fix it' might not translate into German/Swiss!

Most people I have spoken to are loving the new Assos shorts with the ball bag... not used them myself, so no comment!

How does Assos sizing come up?

Ive always liked the look of Assos, but hear they are not fit for us fatter people. (6 foot tall, 34 waist)

back on topic.

Mrs Aud and myself have been discussing this very issue. It does seem pads sizes are on the small side.

Bought some Biemme bibshorts from Planet X recently as a punt (they were only £9.99) and they have the best pad ever!!!

TIR (XXXL) fits 36-38" waist and 6'1"+ tall - that is their largest size.
XLG (XXL) is 34-36" also 6'1"+ tall (i.e. same as TIR just slimmer fit)
XL (XL) is probably the size you want.

I bought Assos XLG bibs when I was size 38"+ and they were perfect at 6' I'm glad I didn't go for the TIR. I got a T_Pro and a T.FI.Mille_S5 and maybe the T.FI.Mille_S5 in XL might have been large enough as the fabric stretches further. I'm going to be getting a couple of T_Pro in XL or just L soon.

What are Gore bibs compared to Assos like?

According to Assos, you are a little short for XLG at 6'0" but perhaps you have long femur bones? TIR and XLG are the same length just the TIR has a wider fit for fat blokes (38")
A lot of it comes down to personal preference, as some people like tight lycra and others like not so tight fitting lycra. Also, one mans 38" isn't the same as another i.e you might squeeze into a 38 loose fit or just slip in easily to a 38 slim cut - that difference is quite large! Also you might have a fat arse, whereas the next person might have a beer gut, and the next guy might have both e.g. in need of TIR!

Quite. It's always a difficult time to guess what size is my size when buying a new brand. I wasn't too sure at the time so I went for XLG and I was spot on. If I had paid too much attention to the size guide then I would have chosen "L" which I thing would have been too small at the time. You do have to take your waist size into consideration, having said that the TIR must be for really big people. The thing to watch out with very tight lycra is that it can be very transparent.

depends what you call call 'really big people' - a tall, 38" waist person will fit a TIR. Compared to a pro cyclist that is very big, but compared to the UK population, it's nothing out of the ordinary.
