Thanks for the responses! I've been trying to look online for good second hand ones but there's not much real choice online, and honestly I don't know enough about bikes to know what's a good deal in store lol

If you want a new bike that comes with a garuntee and service go for the B-Twin, it will get you about and be better quality than the halfords (wont fall to bits if it sees daylight)

You may find a good store which will give you some extras (free) you get you on your way. plus thay can give you adivce.

One of my local bike shops had a Dawes road bike from 1982 for sale, the last time i visited about a month ago. For 150 quid you get a good looking, fairly light weight, fully reconditioned decent bike!
I'd find a small, run down looking, local bikes only shop, and see what they have.

Come to think of it If i had the room and not had a nagging wife i'd have bought it myself! It's all red in colour with a cream coloured saddle and handlebar tape, plenty of chrome, and Campagnolo gears and their trademark shifters on the downtube!

I bought my daughter a (mountain) bike from Decathlon for about this budget - the 'Rockrider 5.0' - it was reviewed on the gadget show and came out tops in its budget bikes catagory.
Click this link to find out more - and watch the review..... http://fwd.channel5.com/gadget-show/videos/feature/budget-bikes

Comments below the video are also worth reading - both positive, and informative ones.

Its all the money I had spare at the time, its about 18 months old now and it is still gets used every day by her.
I know from the great stuff i've learnt on here that a few more quid and a bit more searching would probably have been a better way of doing things, but at the time it was my best apparent option.
The Decathlon entry level road bike, the Triban 3 is sub £300, and is the doggies doo dah's and the review in this months cycling magazines confirms its actually better than that!
