I know there are many of us looking for work and this thread is not meant to be cocky or flippant in any way...

I have recieved two job offers in the last two days and I am genuinely stuck as to which one to go for!

One job is for a small ish privately owned firm with 50 or so empoyees turning over £15m a year and they are offering a 10k a year pay rise but not sure where i could go promotion wise long term.

Second is for a global firm in medical industry with 9,000 staff worldwide and £1bn annual turnover, with only 2.5k more a year than now and further from home.

The roles are both a global scale and doing very similar thing day to day, I usually have a gut feel for good/bad places but they are both great opportunities!

So... big souless corporation, or small family run businesses, what is best? although neither do the cycle to work scheme!!!

After working in a small company for 10+ years, I would go with the global one. However, I'm lead to beleive that not all small companies are as bad as the one I work for!

As you've already noticed, promotion wise you may be a bit stuffed.

What benifits do they offer? Health care, holiday, etc.

I would go for the small company.  Look at growth prospects, if they expand then there is more chance for you to be trained on new things and take more responsibility.  That isn't so likely with a large company.

Then there is that it is near to home and finally the extra money.

So my take is 3:0 for the small company.

What's wrong with the job you have at the moment and if it's not good why didn't your instinct tell you that in the first place?

Although the +£10k job is further away it's obviously of interest enough for you to consider it, that and the fact that the other job is 'dead end' so it's not a long term prospect would make me favour the multi-national conglomerate (hawk, spit). So it's really down to how far you're prepared to travel for work. If it's hours away I wouldn't fancy it as I have young kids and like to see them of an evening - you've got young kids too so probably feel the same. Big company might have flexible working, health care, better pension, etc. etc. If it's within reasonable striking distance I'd go for it.

Oh yeah and you don't ride a bike so C2W is irrelevant as far as you're concerned! ;)

I've got to differ with you on that one, I was hoping to influence Wigsies next bike purchase. When he, inevitably, wooses out with a splinter, or something else equally life threatening, then I get a cheap bike. For anyone else I wouldn't try to influence the purchase, I'd just be happy with what I got. But this is Wigsie and I don't want him following his heart and getting a ladies frame.

On the job front, depends on where you want to go, onwards and upwards then the corporate, plateau out then the smaller firm. You can do well out of a corporate but it will remove your soul, assuming that would still be an issue

Good point...

My 'instincts' let me down when I moved from my old job into current one! hoping they are not going to do the same here!

The big company is 20 ish miles from home so not a huge difference but still there all the same.

Have recieved contract etc from one just waiting for other before I make decision and resign from current place! I usually have a bit of a favourite or a clue as to what I am going to do but this time I have no idea!

Wigsie,
In these uncertain times you have to look at the long term stability of companies. Large, multi-national global companies have stability and job prospects. Smaller compaies with 50 employees may suffer from short term loss of contracts and look for short term redundancy fixes. Last in = first out. I would consider your experience and security where you are until the market picks up and reconsider in a year's time. Failing that it's your call but check out the small company with Companies House to check their trading position before you "jump ship".

Well, true 3BM but without time in the company and with possibly a 3 to 6 month settling in period [?] it's more risky than 10 years experience! Unless they want to get rid of some faces that don't fit or old wood when doing their marking assessments... not that that would apply to Wigsie though.

Quite right, I am a bit awesome!

I have only ever really worked for SME's as I enjoy the flexibility! but I do like the idea of the big business and career progression... I shall maybe push for a compromise with the salary!

Which is in the nicest building? I base where I want to work on that.

Polar opposite's actually although both very nice in their own right!

One is basically a converted house in the countryside! With a nice 1/2 acre garden and woodlands to the rear, the other is a huge glass building on a purpose build complex!

Tricky one that mate.....

Do you still intend to commute on the bike ?

TBH faced a similar one myself a few years back.

One concrete offer and one 'second interview'.

The second interview was for a certain 'Cycling Organisation' in a good role in my line of work - interview by the big chief as well.

The other job was in Education.

Education - Pension and holidays much better - Cycling would have been a dream job. Had to be sensible, so withdrew from the cycling one - pension and holidays were way better, and with young kids, the holidays are essential (3 weeks more)...

Look at the fringe benefits, and possible pressures on your family/recreation time - they are important.

Well the large corporation have agreed to bridge some of the salary gap and I have a vid conference with the VP in the states this afternoon!

I was half hoping they would say no and make my mind up for me!
