Hi,

I currently have a 8yr old cheap Apollo mountain bike which is quiet heavy. I'm looking at getting a new hybrid bike for road cycling 20-30km on weekends and also need something when causally going on trails and in the woods with the kids. The bike will not be used in winter or when raining. Budget around £400-700. Looking for flat bars and without suspension. Also something which is low maintenance and reliable as I'm not much of a DIY'er!

I've narrowed (sort of) down to the following:

TREK FX2 DISC
£460

TREK FX3 DISC
£700

BOARDMAN HYB 8.6
£550

GIANT ESCAPE 2 DISC
£475

GIANT ESCAPE 2 CITY DISC - wasn't really looking at the City but a local shop can get one in stock in 5-6 weeks
£525

GIANT ESCAPE 1 DISC
£649

WHYTE WHITECHAPEL
£599

WHYTE SHOREDITCH - can get hold of one locally in 3 weeks
£699

What would you recommend? I appreciate many bikes are not in stock currently but I can wait for the right bike and price if needed.

Many thanks!

The Whyte’s are great bikes but single chainring. Will that meet your needs?
Less maintenance of course :okay:

otherwise they’re all much of a muchness. I like a carbon fork as lighter but for your needs not necessary Ultimately

I’d take the Shoreditch with carbon fork and gorgeous colour. Only 3 weeks to wait is a bonus too

I've got an older Trek FX3 and a newish Giant Escape, they're both good bikes... the Giant is a little more nimble, the Trek a bit more substantial feeling (the FX makes a fabulous commuting bike).
That Whyte Shoreditch looks lovely though and you don't see too many... I'd be tempted by that one.

Tbh on my current 21 speed bike I only really use around 7 gears so that wouldn't bother me.

Thanks for all the replies, leaning towards the Shoreditch so far unless any other different advice

personally bang for buck i dont think you can discount the Triban rc520 flat bar a little over 700 quid but comes with shimano 105 components

you have too many bikes, you need to do a process of elimination and then see what's left and pour over the specs.

Off the top I would eliminate the Whitechapel, Giant Escape 1 and 2, Boardman, Trek FX 2 and 3 due to the low-end components. Holy crap, that leaves you with just one bike, the White Shoreditich. And why that one? because it comes with the Deore derailleurs, and those derailleurs work extremely well, it's the best derailleur package of any of the choices you gave.
