I kinda have on 1.5 occassions.

First time was on a all brand new bike, may secon or third outing, pedalling along off road then whizzzzszzz legs go round at 3 billion mph.

the pin totaly vsanished, luckily my buddies had a splitter so I was able to get going again.

the other time, the chain started to catch on rear mech, an examination revealed that one of the plates had come away. a field gate and a big stone was enough to get it back on. this was a new fangled 9 pseed chain, possible fitted by me so my fault that one.

.... but all in all, not really have that many chains go in all my years cycling, but then I do look after my bikes and change the chain when they are at the recommended wear.

how about you peeps?

Only once many years ago when I was 10. I pushed the bike all the way home, about 2 miles (mostly uphill!). Since then I've been very attentive to the condition of my bike chains.

You've just reminded me, I need to change my chain, cheers
Nope, never had one snap, hope I never do as I just know I'd be out of the saddle and end up trying to see if I actually could bruise my pelvic bone

Yep. At ten pm on a dark and stormy night going up a hill ten miles from work where I needed to do a small but important task. Luckily I had just started to carry a chaintool and I was back on the road in a few minutes. I'm never without one now and I've needed it a couple of time subsequently.

One when touring in Spain going up a big hill - no idea why - it was not that old but had done a couple of thousand k - about 10minutes to repair in 35°

More times than I can remember. I used to run them into the ground and then some when I was a student - just join it back if it broke :-). Rollers were missing off half the links in the end.

Once. Had double slow puncture (thanks to some thorns) in middle of nowhere, using mtb on bridleways in deepest darkest Northumberland. Was about 6 miles from civilisation/car... decided to pump as nec, and hobble back to car, but then chain snapped. Had no chain tool (), so left bike in a ditch and walked cross-country back to car... drove back as near as I could, parked up, walked back to get bike...

Once for me, perhaps 30 years ago on an ancient 3 speed Raleigh with bar brakes.
Stood on the pedals giving it some (as usual.. never can go slow)...BANG  nuts hammered into the crossbar ;)...wobbled all over trying to keep control, possibly my most horrible and painful moment on a bike

Yes, twice. And it was a campag record 10 speed chain both times. the first time I was in the middle of nowhere in Canada and the second I was about 20 miles from my house. Both times i bodged it with a chain tool and limped home.

I've gone to a SRAM chain to see if I have better luck with that.

most recent - 2006 a Campag 10 speed record chain went after about 700 miles..standing up to go uphill..snap.. and over I went. I had a chain tool and it was enough to get home.
KMC chains seem to last well. I've been using them ever since with a split link. To be fair on the Campag chain it did give some instructions about joining links etc.. but I didn't read it too carefully.. after all its just a case of putting two ends together. I think one is also supposed to use their 50 quid chain tool so it could be partly my fault.
I've also in the past stripped teeth of rear cogs..

Fortunately no but I have had a crank arm break which I suppose has pretty much the same effect.
