I started looking into this after I did a search for personal loan rates with various banks. Lo and behold the next time I logged into my hotmail account there's loan adverts (for the one with the puppet pensioners at 1748% p.a).
The google tracking I switched off easily enough, the rest took a while longer.
You have to take the view that anything you do or say is monitored, recorded or tracked in some manner whether malicious or benign. Considering most of us are sat typing here on MS Windows machines, you're already using something with 65,535 'ports' to probe, and a continual stream of 'malicious user may gain control your computer' type security plugs being downloaded.
The design of the machines we use has been fatally flawed since the first DOS operating system was created.
