dogs have been out for an hours walk, and i want to go out on my bike as its a lovely day. BUT the dogs are sitting in the garden sunning themselves, so why do i feel so mean at the thought of getting them indoors:addict:

Its far too warm for your dogs to be outside for any length of time. Put them indoors and go for a ride. Its for their own good, after all
I am just about to tell myself the same thing!

My sister has a puppy and she is feeling guilty about locking him in the house when she goes to work, so she is thing of buying a second cell*** for him to be installed in the garden shed so he can have the run of the (enclosed) garden and snooze in the shed all day. Whether this plan is viable depends on whether he behaves himself and doesn't whine or bark all day, annoying the neighbours.

*** She insists on calling the thing the dog sleeps in a 'crate'. I said that it is made of metal bars and mesh, and has a locked door so it is a 'cell'!

Bring the dogs in, go out on your bicycle and return by lunchtime ie: 13:00. Open fridge, prepare ice, drop some cubes into a very tall verre, go to drinks cabinet, pour a few fingers of 'Cinquante-et-Un', top up with Cristaline, Contrex or whatever the plastic bottles of water are that are stashed and say "Ah - I feel great!"
Repeat as necessary.
hmm how did you get your username again?

Heat the shed!

Wolves live outdoors, and all dogs are descended from them, so they should be okay with the cold ...

Only joking - obviously, a small terrier isn't the same as a wolf! I reckon that she wasn't thinking that far ahead. Apart from when we get nasty, long winters like the one we just had though, I would have thought that a dog would be warm enough in a bed in a shed in a sheltered garden for about 8 or 9 months of the year?

I didn't agree with dogs being put in crates until I got a Labrador puppy a couple of years ago, all the advice said crate him, took the dog a while to be happy again when I replaced the crate with a proper dog bed. I have now lent the crate to a friend of my son's whose dog was wetting itself everytime it was left alone (due to previous owner and abuse). I suggested putting it in a crate, slowly at first, the dog is a lot happier now it has it's own safe place.
