Not if you're an everyday commuter. A spare is a must as bike's have all sorts of mechanical problems and one can't always sort these out until the weekend.

I have three, a road bike for dry conditions, hub geared MTB for wet/icy conditions and a folder for mixed mode transport.

If you regularly commute by bike then it is a good idea to have at least two so you have a backup for those occasions you are running late and you notice your usual bike has a puncture.

I'm not sure if, in the whole history of humanity, anyone has ever come up with a statement that was as incorrect as this one!

Try riding 100 road miles on a downhill bike, or comming down the tracks at Fort William on a road bike. I'm pretty sure you'll think differently afterwards!
