In a morning mine yowls until I go and sit at the laptop! Then he curls up, balancing somehow. Or he turns round and round purring, his fur and tail standing on end - that's what he does when he's happy!

I think it's because, to a cat, you are sitting still, preoccupied and apparently doing nothing and this makes them feel like you need attention, or should be giving them attention, more like.
