A great start to the week to all of you!

I'm completely new to the world of cycling and vintage bikes or better said, I kind of got thrown into it after receiving an old road bike. Since then, I’ve been trying to learn more about what exactly I have on my hands.

From what I’ve found so far, it appears to be a Wilier Triestina in Gerolsteiner livery from around 2004, possibly connected to Davide Rebellin. The bike even has his name on the frame, which makes me wonder if it could be one of his actual team bikes.

What’s puzzling is the serial number it doesn’t match the typical format I’ve seen on replica models, so I’ve reached out to Wilier in hopes of getting more information.

Since I’m still very new to all of this and don’t have much background in cycling or bike collecting, I’d really appreciate any insights from those who know more about bikes from this era.

My goal is to eventually find the right new home for this bike ideally with someone who can truly appreciate it for what it might be.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi, great looking bike and a real mystery to try and solve!

If you really want to dig then I suggest contacting Gerolsteiner on the off change they kept records related to their sponsorship. You could also try and contact other riders on the team to get a sense of how the serial numbers worked and if the one you have fits the pattern. The fact that it does not fit the pattern for the replica bikes is already a good sign.

Good luck with the research.

From what I can tell, I’m quite confident this bike was either a training bike or a spare used by Davide Rebellin during that period.

I was the Wilier Triestina distributor in Canada for nearly 20 years, and at the end of each season Wilier regularly offered us genuine team bikes, including spares, directly from their professional teams. I do recognize this specific bike, as I distinctly remember purchasing one of the Gerolsteiner team spares from that squad.

That would also explain why the serial number doesn’t match the typical replica format you’re seeing. Team bikes and spares from that era often didn’t follow the same numbering conventions as consumer replicas.

Hopefully this helps clarify things a bit and adds some useful context as you continue your research. It’s great to see that your goal is to place the bike with someone who truly understands and appreciates what it represents.

Best regards
