I have a £100 excess and need it replaced. Is it best to go through the insurance hotline and let Autoglass handle it all or can you do it yourself with a company who will not charge you the excess but will claim from your insurance company?

Never heard of that option before.

If you have excess to pay then you have excess to pay. If a windscreen company is offering to do the job on your insurance without excess then perhaps it is increasing the bill by the excess amount and and then claiming it from your insurer as if it were without the excess. That would be fraudulent.

However, interested to know if that is, or isn't, the case.

Windscreen claims with many (most?) insurers are not subject to excess, if you use the approved repairers. I believe, anyway

I found a big crack in the windscreen...didnt contact the insurers, went straight to Autoglass...arranged an appointment online and the glass was replaced efficiently. £65 for a big front screen. My excess is more than that.

The no excess company is committing a fraud, well maybe. The insurers and trade are still out on that one. Although it does not not effect your no claims, unless of course it is still growing in which case it will not do so that year. Also as the BBC programme back in December showed there is a very good chance that your premiums will increase year on year for the next 5, over and above what they would have done without that claim.

It is in fact a very shady area and one I have spent the last 10 years trying to expose.

What sort of car is it?

How did you damage the windscreen? I can get you £5000 compensation NOW with no fee, just send me all the details. What about the whiplash?
