...just had the first long-tailed tits in the garden. A sure harbinger of impending cold and darkness.

Be afraid!

Any signs in your neck of the woods?

Squirrels digging up the daffs?

Wolves howling closer?

Frost on the screen? No, not David Jason on the telly!

Buying a sledge in October can be useful as it virtually guarantees a snow-free winter for the next five or six years.

In fact I checked with the shopkeeper and asked for a guarantee that it would snow before I handed over me hard-earned - he assured me it would.

He told me that the sledges were made by a couple of OAPs in Birmingham, they bought the press as something to keep them occupied - last winter they said it was the hardest they'd ever worked in their entire lives

+1 firing up the woodburner. Cleaning it out first was the pain - tank de lawd for Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner.

I got a load of chestnuts in the woods yesterday, I've just made a load of red tomato and chili chutney, and we've fired up the woodburning stove for the first time since May. I love the autumn - mists and mellow fruitfulness and all that!
