I have virgin cable through a wired motorolla surfboard modem via the earthnet connection. tried to install a sweex lw300 wirless routerby plugging the earthneet cable from the modem into the wan socket on the router and the earthnet cable from the computer to the lan socket, once all switched on i get a message. local area connection 6 has limited or no connectivity, problem occured because network did not assign network address to computer. I tried the repair button, didnt work, also tried automaticly obtaining ip and dns servers still dont work. can anyone help im getting to the point where i might have to fix it with a lump hammer.By the way im not very computer savy so if any answers could be explained in plain englishwould be greatly appreciated.

Didn't read the op properly - ignore.

Do you know how to get into your Routers settings?

It sounds like you will need it to work as your DNS, instead of using the Virgin one.
There should be a little section in the sweex settings regarding this to 'play with'.

To get into router settings you normally put something like 192.168.1.1 into a browser, if that shows anything it will confirm that you can reach your router from your computer...even if you can't yet reach the internet from that.

You need to go into your router settings and find out what its IP address is (probably)

192.168.2.1

If it is this then assign your PC the IP addy

192.168.2.2 (the next one on as they can't have the same addy.

Then put into your PC settings

255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask

192.168.2.1 as the gateway address

For the DNS settings use OPENDNS server

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

its starting to get a bit technical for me. after automaticly obtaining ip and dns server addresses i opened the browser and entered 192.168.53.1 it just keeps coming up cannot find server, have tried contacting company but no phone number just email so waiting for reply.

I just read the manual and it does seem fairly step by step...and from the fact you found the 192.168.53.1 (ip address) you sound like you have actually read it, which is good!

Do as GordyFae asks, it may help us diagnose the problem, but did you get all the lights on the modem and router as expected in the instruction manual at each step? Take it slow, we'll get there in the end!

Reboot the modem then the router for a start.

Good luck btw.]

+1

The cable modems 'latch' onto whichever hardware mac address (different to the dynamic ip address its set in hardware in the network device) is the first to connect to it - if you simply unplug one device and then plug another in, you won't get a connection. Resolved by first plugging the cable from the wireless router into the cable modem, then reboot the cable modem. This will then associate the router to the modem.

thanks for the help half of the prob is now sorted. I switched everything off turned back on as rh100 recomended and i have internet connection through the router via the earthnet cables. My next prob is i cant get to the router settings, it tells me to enter 192.168.1.1 in the browser box but all i get is cannot find server. a little less stessed now but still got me hammer to hand just in case.

when you do ipconfig /all , what does it show as the gateway address?

but i'm guessing your subnet is 192.168.3.x , so you could try 192.168.3.1 in your browser
