Anyone make this commute by bike?

What route do you take?

I don't commute that far but have rode to Brum from Wolves before. Birmingham New Road and then the Hagley Road. I'm sure there's a much more scenic route though ...... oh but hang on..... maybe not. B)

you can also go the way that goes through West Brom and Handsworth but i've only ever driven it, not cycled.

I'm currently thinking the canal. The Bham New Road really doesn't appeal!!

Up to you, but beware of the many piss heads under the bridges, particularly Broad Street in Wolves. It put us off doing the canal to Brum.

That's the way I used to cycle when I commuted from Wolves to Transco, near Spaghetti Junction. Down the back roads (roughly parallel to the A41 ... it's obvious on a map) to West Brom, then along the A41 through Handsworth, then across over the A38(M) to near Star City. Always lots of fun to do when I finished work at 3am.
If I knew how to do a google map, I'd show you. Whereabouts are you heading for in Birmingham?

DON'T go along the canal tow path.

There are thugs along there who will push you in and steal your bike.

A41 - all the way. ( Wednesbury ) - West Brom - Hockley flyover. 'Safety in numbers'.

I'm going into Central Birmingham. You can use www.bikehike.co.uk to plot a route and email me the resulting gpx file if you're feeling generous

I used to go along the canal all the time, then turn off to go through the Netherton Tunnel. (*shudders at the memory*).

Never had any problem with thugs. It was usually lovely.

(And you get to see the legendary 'Tojo the Dwarf' graffiti on the rail bridge.)

I'd definitely recommend the canal.
I commuted birmingham (smethwick rolfe st) to wolverhampton along the canal for about 3 years and never had any trouble. The route is very quiet and peaceful, and you rarely see anyone. Maybe everyone gets scared away by the rumours of thuggery? Some parts almost seem like a river bank with reeds and wildlife. Get some lights for the Coseley tunnel bit, it's only 330 metres long, but gets dark in the middle!
