I'd definitely recommend the canal.
I commuted birmingham (smethwick rolfe st) to wolverhampton along the canal for about 3 years and never had any trouble. The route is very quiet and peaceful, and you rarely see anyone. Maybe everyone gets scared away by the rumours of thuggery? Some parts almost seem like a river bank with reeds and wildlife. Get some lights for the Coseley tunnel bit, it's only 330 metres long, but gets dark in the middle!

Surely there are no thugs around early in the morning. It would be the commute home i wouldn't do down the canal.

Well, from my experience, I cycled home in the evenings along this route for 3 years, all year round, with no problems at all.

I currently commute along the canal Rolfe st to Birmingham city centre. This bit is also, from my experience, thug free.. though it's not as scenic.

Downward, as you 'wouldn't go down the canal', how do you know what it's like?!

ahhh.. now I know what you're on about! - I'm sure I've seen it from the train.

(Hmm, it's true the graffiti doesn't make much sense on it's own!)

That's the one, it's on a ?cattle? bridge really near the railway bridge - the low, lightweight railway bridge which if you're underneath, when a long pendolino comes over at full speed, makes you think it might just be the end. Of everything.
