Cycling home tonight on my commute. Zooming along about 20mph, I see a WV on the ready to pull out and turn right out of a driveway. I (maybe wrongly) assumed he had seen me, not so. Just as I was near level he pulled right out. I couldn't swerve left as there was a parked car. So I just, and I mean *just* managed to squeeze between his offside and the parked car. My bar-end wacked the corner of his bonnet (Bar-end now had a nice scrape along the rubber). How I managed to stay upright I don't know. I stopped and cycled back. The WVM then started to apologise giving that old excuse SMIDNSY. Said he didn't realise I was going so fast and that he should have looked a bit more carefully. Also said glad I was ok. Of course I was all ready to eff and blind... I was so taken aback at his reaction that all I could say was "no worries, just a close call, no harm done"

Hi Ian, Glad you escaped that one. I hate those near misses all cyclists seem to get more than there fair share of.

On the politeness thing. I've discovered the same thing recently, I took a slightly different route home one night this week , which took me over Sydenham Hill, Basically I nearly got pinched by a bus! WhenI caught up with the bus at the next stop, I tapped on the drivers window and once he reluctantly opened the window I very politely explained, that he had nearly squashed me by overtaking me on the bend. He briefly apologised and seemed almost relieved that I had'nt given him a mouth full! He then followed me all the way along the road until the next stop where I lost him, he followed at a safe distance and gave me plenty of room, it felt like an apology. Also I was chuffed with myself for having been assertive not aggresssive. on other occasions I have given people a mouth full, but I don't think it helps much!
