Saw my supplier yesterday, a local tree surgeon and found him sitting disconsolate in his Landy, staring at a massive pile of split, unsold logs. The winter storms produced a surplus but the warm weather has worsened their problem - now would be a good time to ask for a "three bags for two" discount as they just want to make space in their yards. Anyway you ought to be filling the logstore now in readiness for next winter.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
We usually start around may/june. If this is your first year having a wood burning stove, you need to give the wood time to dry out more before you use it. And always buy more than you think you need.

My supplier got greedy last year and now cant shift anything .
It went from £30 for a tipper truck full to £50 for a 1 ton bag . I think he had been reading the book " How to lose all of your customers in one day "

Yes. Some are like that, but if you live in a small community, word soon gets round, and theyre business takes a nose dive, and quite rightly so.

This is ours now... the bay in the foreground is an emergency topup bag we bought in the Autumn and are still having to finish beside the stove before burning so we will finish that next Autumn, after which the big bay (already half dry and filled last month) ought to be ready.

My log store is around 25 feet long and 12 feet wide. And has a roof with guttering where the rain is collected in 1000ltre tanks. Its humongous

Working on a golf course surrounded by millions of trees was always a good source of free fuel for me. We had all the necessary equipment to keep us busy and warm. And I love cutting, splitting and bagging wood.

Then we moved into a new flat WITHOUT a woodburner. Talk about distraught!

I'm envious.

It may looka a bit OTT, but the wood burner is our only form of heating in the winter, so we need a large supply of wood

Err. Its not mine. A ewe and her lamb managed to get through the fence and has taken up residence for the season. We usually end up with around half a dozen. The farmer will come and round them up when its time for them to be sold.

I would also advise people to try to have a couple of sources to buy your wood from. One year we were running out of wood and the stuff we got from our usual source was so wet, that nothing shortsof a nuclesr explosion would have got it to burn.
