Has anyone /anyone's kids got one of these toys?

My question is: if you oil the pole (e.g. olive oil, 3-in-1 or whatever), does the woodpecker still jerk down the pole, or will it just slide down smoothly?

I reckon it will work its way down the pole as it should.
Is the woodpecker stuck?

I'm asking because I haven't got one. It's a teaching idea to illustrate lubrication - but I need to find out if lubricating the pole does make it slide down smoothly. It is supposed to be jerky, so oiling it is not a normal way of 'playing' with the thing!

I don't think lubricating it will make any difference. Have you tried Youtube? I bet someone's put this to the test.

It might depend on the viscosity of the lubricant - something viscous could just glue it up in effect, as the toy relies on the small difference between the relative size of pole and hole.

Also, if the bit with the hole is wooden and untreated within the hole, it could absorb the lubricant and swell up, jamming it.

Yeah, I was going to say that.

It'll still jerk, but slide down the pool further between each jerk - depending on the viscosity of the lubey

The slow-mo bit on the video was interesting. I have never looked at the woodpecker toys as a science project before. I might go in the loft later and see if I can find mine, if I can find either the ladders or my friction boots.
