I've moved to a new office, and now have the most exhilarating ride to work ever! 6 miles, a total descent of 900 feet with only one uphill stretch on the way to work. First downhill is great, and the Boardman comes into its own with a 43.5mph roll down this morning. Don't often ride that road, but will soon get used to it. From there it's a 30mph cruise down through the first village, then an uphill stretch of about 600 yards to a roundabout. From there it's 5 miles downhill all the way to the town centre blessed with a former dual carriageway now single lane 30mph limit with a decent wide cycle lane.

Coming home was a bit different. Bit of a slog, with the last hill to look forward to. Took nearly three times as long coming home as it did going in! Still, have just given up the fags, so will no doubt improve as I have a few more goes at it!

I've plotted a couple of alternative routes, one of which loses most of the height in the first mile and a half, but I reckon the return journey would be brutal on a compact chainset. They're bad enough on the MTB!

Ah! three times as long. I am delighted to see it! I was thrashing myself over a ten minute difference between going to work (50') down a 360 feet descent (from Crystal Palace in London) and coming home (60') largely up it. I feel better now.

But there is no force on Earth that would get me to do 43 mph down Gipsy Hill. I wouldn't dare.

maybe find an alternative route home that is also down hill

My mate reckons if you wait for the earth to rotate to the right point you can. But he was on mushrooms at the time........

Well, a week into the new route, and four days without fags. I've cut the return journey from 46 minutes to 37 (in a headwind yesterday as well!) Journey in varies between 16 and 17 minutes depending on traffic. Max speed on Round Ings is now 45.5mph........ ;)
