Fastest ever speed on the bike to-day... 72.44 kph or 48mph in old money. It was on a hill I've been down many times but this time there was a storng wind at my back. Seemed to make all the difference. For any locals it was coming down from beecraigs park near linlithgow

I did a PB yesterday: 31.5mph. Broke 30mph for the first time . I don't know how you all have the nerve to go so fast.

It's not the speed that wrecks your nerves ... it's the newly gravelled 90 degree right-hander at the bottom of the hill that you didn't see whilst you were busy shouting and grinning as you hit 40+mph on the way down!!!

I must admit, I can be a wuss going round bends at speed ... it's not natural ...

Well done halfmanhalfbike ... that's flippin fast that is!!!

Cheers,
Shaun

It is certainly fast, but I think it is not quite 48mph? That would be c. 77km/h by my calcs.

I'm sure you will soon crack that 80 km/h barrier, but ca' canny.

Watch out - trouble lurks when you eventually go past 50!   ;)

I've mentioned my 'big air' at 56 mph in Burnley story a few times so I'll leave that one alone for now.

It was the other 'big air' at 50+ mph event that really made me start to feel nervous at high speeds on my bicycle...

Coming down off the steep top of Fleet Moss towards Hawes felt merely fairly exciting until the gradient abruptly steepened to 25%. As the road suddenly disappeared from beneath me, my bike (plus its stunned rider) took off - all I could see was stunning Yorkshire Dales scenery and a disconcertingly large air gap between me and the tarmac!

It's true what they say - time really does seem to slow down when you think you are about to die! I found myself wondering where the nearest hospital was, and would the Yorkshire Air Ambulance turn out for me?

I got away with it, but I read that another rider was not so lucky.  Face-planting at 50 mph can't be fun!

Let's be careful out there folks! Watch out for gusting crosswinds on descents, and always be extra careful on roads you haven't ridden before, you don't know what lies ahead...
