So our local council is running a workplace cycle challenge from 2 - 22nd July. The local businesses are registering and seeing who can clock up the most miles. A few people from work have already registered so I have too. I can't remember the last time I've cycled to work (I'm a disgrace I know), I need to get back into it so hopefully a bit of friendly office / cross company competition will give me the motivation that I require. Well, providing this rain and wind effs off that is. The wind the last couple of years has been dreadful, I've lost my cycling mojo due to a combination of family illness & bereavement and it being constantly windy and this year it's looking to be worse (on the wind front, that is, I don't want any more family bereavements). I mean we went camping for a few days last week and one of our tents blew down!

Anyone else taking part in a work place challenge?

Just done our Manchester one. I lost out being the big mile muncher as I went on holiday. Came third in our 'Organisation' - not bad considering I was only riding two of the three weeks.

Use this challenge to get back on the bike. Certainly helps. Glad I'm cycling to and from work - too much crap at work, at least this lets me get a clear head. Had a really crappy day last week, got my head clear by riding the long 20 mile route home.

Swansea one is concurrent with yours and part of the same initiative. I was a bit grumpy about it initially, due to various aspects that reflected recent problems with the CTC more generally, such as the Trust bypassing the local groups and the lack of openness about money. The website is managed by a company called Challenge for Change, which will of course be doing very nicely out of it, while those of us whose time provides the in-kind contributions can scarcely get our hands on a budget. Anyway, I decided to get behind it because of the amount of work my local campaign group has put in, and because it isn't a bad idea in itself. It's not about mileage though, or the regular cyclists would run off with all the prizes - it's about levels of participation. I'd be interested to hear more about how it goes up there...

Well, so far, despite being one of the larger employers we are, *ahem*, somewhere near the bottom. So I've made the concerted effort to cycle in this week. I've contributed a whole 16.58 miles. I've really enjoyed it actually, despite the rain there hasn't been that much wind. I very much doubt we will win anything though, but we shall see. Our numbers are dropping. One high miler has defected to another company and another has moved house and now lives too far away to cycle in. Oh the pressure!

Bumpetty-bump. How did yours go, Plax, and do you think it is likely to have any impact beyond the timeframe of the challenge itself?
