Worn rear cassette, and advice for replacement! ( Shimano )

Can anyone tell me if this is worn..?

I intend to replace a worn chain, and thought I would change this too, but want to be certain that its knackered! ( I could keep this for spare!)

I'm replacing this one an with HG41 8 speed, and an HG40 chain. The cassette above is an HG 30, 8 speed, am I buying the wrong cassette!?

It depends what you want!

I think that cassette's largest cogs look pointy which usually means worn so I would recycle it.

I think that the shimano 8 speeds are pretty much interchangeable. I prefer KMC chains too, because I've never had one wear as fast as Shimano HG.

I'll go wth the Hg chain as it's ordered now, and I can cehck the wear as we go through the summer

Looks ok to me, the teeth will have an uneven profile to aid shifting which sometimes looks like some broken or worn. Wear is normally on the middle sprockets, unless the OP rides everywhere in a granny gear.

I think quite a few are showing 'peening' on the front edge (probably due to a worn chain transferring all the load to the front edge) only way to be sure is to see if they'll run OK with a new chain fitted.

Thanks for your thoughts, I think I will give it a close look, once the new one turns up! It did clean up well, better than i expected, and the chain was definitely trashed, so the new chain, and the new cassette will go on, and this one will become a spare foe a month or so.
