If anyone a ever accuses you of having friends, tell them its not that you don't have friends, but that you don't have fake on.

I was seriously considering putting the bike in the back of my truck and heading to south Florida for the new year. I even checked hotel rates and availability. My brother told me a couple of days after I started considering it that he and his family would be going abroad for the Christmas and New Years holidays.

My mother is older and can take care of herself for the most part but I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving her by herself during the holidays with everyone being so far away (even though if she knew I was considering it, she would probably insist I go). So now she gets stuck with having to deal with me for the holidays.:snowball:

Maybe I will do it next year. I say go for it.

I think a lot of folk don't enjoy NYE, I don't because of the enforced jollity (Try being a scot who doesn't like the New Year!).

We've spent the last few years away on NYE in the middle or rural France and gone for walks or bike rides during the day.

I can easily see the attraction of a time spent away from anyone you know

Perhaps you could call the hostel manager and ask some questions regarding the bookings at that time. It could be the hostel has been all but booked out with one group of science fiction geeks/birdwatchers/trainspotters/insert a group you wouldn't want to spend 5 minutes with, or it could be booked by a number of eclectic groups or individuals.

Oddly enough, just last night I got a possible invite for NYE which is nice and unexpected but this idea instead of a pub full of drunken idiots still has a lot of appeal...

Just make sure it isn't Whitehaven... have a great break tyred- I envy you.

I hear the people of Egremont look quite enviously upon Whitehaven
