Writing foreign characters in Word 2007

Is there a quicker way of writing foreign characters using Microsoft Word 2007. At present, whenever I have to write some European's name with an umlaut or accent, I have to go to the main menu, select Insert Symbol and find the character I want.

If you are using them regularly it is easy to remember the shortcuts, but if you only ever use them every now and again, it's probably quicker to do the Insert Symbol approach. If you can't find the symbol you are wanting, then a google search should find you a similar site for the language you are after.

Would it not be possible to write down the shortcuts on a piece of paper, and have that to hand to refer to. Or have the new generation lost the power to write. Surely by persistant use of the shortcut, that will commit it to memory.

If it's one language only, you could always buy a keyboard from that country, that will have all the specific letter on it.

Another way to do this is to use the accent/overstrike feature, i.e. type CTRL + <accent>, then the the letter that you want to see accented. You will need to use the SHIFT key + <character key> to get some accents, e.g. ^ = SHIFT + 6. So for example . . .

CTRL + ^ followed by u produces û
CTRL + : (i.e. SHIFT + ; ) followed by e produces ë
CTRL + ' followed by a produces á
CTRL + ~ (i.e. SHIFT + #) followed by n produces ñ
CTRL + / followed by O produces Ø
CTRL + @ (i.e. SHIFT + ') followed by A produces Å

The ALT + ???? method doesn't seem to work in MS Word 2007. Besides, I'd still have to look up the number.
