I guess with hindsight we all make em but mine yesterday....
Driving along a Pboro road I saw an old guy, well dressed'ish, quite fit for his age, thumbing a lift. It was very hot, I thought maybe he's broken down so I stopped.
Apparently (and he was quite clear and lucid) he was trying to get to Oakham. He was miles away from any road that'd take him that way so I offered to take him to the bus depot and dropped him there. During a relaxed convo on the way he did say his wife would be mad at him...which seemed odd but I passed that by.
Later, I'm reading outer local paper....errr....'Have you seen Frank, 81, from Oakham, vulnerable and maybe disorientated who's got lost during a visit to Pboro Hospital.

Oh, that was him. I never thought he was 81, maybe 70, he was quite lucid, had plenty of fluids with him, quite chatty....so while it's a bit unusual, I didn't think too much of it.
I've met plenty of other mature fellas passing through Phoro, usually perhaps guys down on their luck and headed somewhere...i even brought one such guy a pack of fags once, he was headed to Northampton, had no money but was happy to hitch it...but I felt sorry for him having no fags.

I contacted the police about todays guy who logged it but that was 2 hours later when I read it in the paper. They found him later so no harm done.

Maybe next time I'll ask...are you ok (which I did anyway because of the heat), do you want me to take you to the police or similar so they can get help if they're lost etc. Maybe doing that would inflame some folk...whaddaya do ?

You've no way of knowing if they want the police involved. If they don't...

You did the right thing in picking him up though. Two known points he'd been seen at.

I don't feel that bad about the whole thing, he was quite relaxed and happy, but you realise with a little more probing I could have got more from him.
Ah, no matter, all's well. If it happens again (I used to hitch a lot so I'm not averse to giving a lift) and I even suspect the guys a bit vulnerable , I will probe a bit deeper if the person's amenable.

You did absolutely the right thing.

We once had a guy walking around our garden early one morning as I was setting off for an absolutely-must-be-at-appointment but I couldn't drive off and leave him so I engaged him in conversation. I quickly realised he was genuinely confused that his house which may once have been where mine now was/is hadn't stood there for many years. Fortunately for me (not so for her), my wife is a senior nurse of many years experience who wasn't phased in the least about this situation and took it in her stride after I'd handed over my responsibilities and she was pleasant to him until the police arrived to escort the poor gentleman back to his residence.

Can't see what you did that could be a wrong decision.

On reading your post, it seems you acted very generously and can't see any criticism can be attached to you.

Dementia sufferer's have periods of very clear lucidity so its not always possible to spot one. I know this from when my mother in law was staying with us prior to her passing. Your experience has prepared you for any future meetings.

Taking him to the bus depot was surely better for him than being stuck in the middle of nowhere. OK, you might have done (even) more if you'd realised he wasn't quite 100%, but the basic act of kindness still stands and does you credit
