At the moment I just don't have time for my PS3. It was packed up when I sold the house, and life has been too full of other stuff to think about getting it back out again.
I'm not the heaviest gamer, but I've gone through a few.
What started to jade me was the requirement to release a 'zombie' version of everything. Boooorrrriiinnnngggg!!!

If I'd carried on I'd have got the PS4 by now. It's just a case of following what I know and am accustomed to. After 25 years in IT my eyes glaze over at the 'mines bigger than yours' fanboy debates.
If I get left behind, what the heck.

The PS4 on a brand new unfragmented hard drive is substantially more nimble and agile at going through menus of various sorts. The PS3 feels sluggish in comparison.

I wasn't being very clear but I was really referring to its handling of dlna-sourced media, something the PS4 can't (yet) do at all and a function whose operation speed is more to do with caching and predictive server interaction than absolute hardware speed.

I have various devices around the home which all handle the media server's mp3 album and artist lists differently - some a slow steady scroll, some a screen of half a dozen at a time. They are all fairly slow and clunky to use, including a dedicated unit that cost more than a PS3, but the PS3 is in a different league.I've got something like 300 different artists listed under S and it goes through the lot by progressive acceleration in seconds in a completely controllable fashion.

It's easily the best dlna player I have. Purists will grumble about the limited number of video formats handled but I'm fine with it. Noisy fan on my old unit is about the only issue I have.

I demoed it to a fellow cycle chatter with a media server who had thought I was a bit nuts to buy a gaming machine and not play games on it. He bought one the next day.

On a side note has PlayStation been able to develop that vital thing which is the ability of verbal communication outside of games on the new console. PS3 was great if you were anti social or didnt want to talk to friends.
If it hasn't well you can just throw it in the bin.
I doubt this very much, it was only last January that the PS2 ceased production, and FIFA 14 was released for it back in September. So the PS2 due to it's popularity and amount of consoles sold has survived not only it's own gaming generation but almost the next..

The market right now is flooded with 360's and PS3's and the publishers (of whom operate in an oligopoly imo) will dictate what games get developed for what console and the backlash from gamers, if all of a sudden the ps3 and 360 were to be left out would be huge - way more then the backlash against Microsoft for it's DRM policy with the X1.

And TBH the PS4 ain't all that imo, I was down Covent Garden today at the PS4 lounge and whilst visually impressed, there was nothing that made me go WOW. Unlike Mario 64 for the N64, GTA3 for the PS2, and the online capability of the 360.

Having said that this is a great time for gaming. Those with a PS3 or a 360 can still look forward to some great games coming out at a reduced cost. And whilst this is going on Sony and Microsoft can crack on and fix some of the current issues and look to expand into the cloud for backwards gaming compatibility. And there should also be some quality exclusives by the Spring/Summer, some decent bundles and that'll be the time to invest.
I don't know about play station but xbox was just as popular but after 2 years games stopped for it. Live died 2009 I think. For playsation I think the ps3 was a failure which is why 2 remained. The case was not the same for the 360 and the original xbox
