I've just bought a refurbished ThinkPad running XP.

When I booted-up my old machine there was a login screen where you had to enter a username and password. There isn't on this one - you go straight to the desktop.

Does anybody know what I have to do to get the login screen enabled please?

not 100% sure but think you need to add a password to the account and from then on it will open to the login screen. I'm on vista at the moment but had a quick search which showed this was how to add a password:
  • Click 'start' in the bottom left hand corner of the screen.
  • Click 'control panel'.
  • Click on the 'user accounts' icon.
  • An area at the bottom of the screen will display the current user accounts that are set-up.
  • Click on the account of which you wish to add the password.
  • Click 'Create a new password' to assign a password to the account.
  • Under 'type a new password' - enter the password you wish to use.
  • Under the confirmation box retype the password.
  • You can add a password hint to help those forgetful users! Simply add a subtle hint in the input field.
  • Click 'Create password'

I'm not near a machine at the moment, but remember there is an option that can be set within the control panel. Try having a snoop around settings>users

If not i'll check tonight and advise

Go on, tilt your head!
Go to Start menu, click Run

Type this and click OK - control userpasswords2

Now check the box that states that users must enter a username and password to login.

Although it's so easy to crack WIndows XP security there's hardly any point in adding it. Takes me as long as it takes to do a couple of reboots!

It does for deterring (small) kids from accessing the home PC though. But yes, I have a linux boot disk knocking around somewhere too lol
