Now, I know what it means, thanks to Google, but was there ever a more pointless and teeth-gratingly irritating phrase?

Literally, "Your Mileage May Vary," coming from the small print in (American?) automobile commercials in the 70's and 80's. It has come to mean an acknowledgement that the opinion of the poster may not be shared by everyone.

Wow, thanks for that. In the first place, I'm already aware that there are as many different opinions as there are people, and in the second, I don't need anyone's permission to hold a different opinion, especially not when expressed through the medium of acronyms. Aaargh.

I've been seeing YMMV on the internet since I started using it, back when smileys had noses and before ROTFL lost its T. I think you're the first person I've ever seen complain about it.

I don;'t think it's used so much in the sense of "your opinion may differ" as "your experience may be different". "I don't find pavement cycling a problem round here. YMMV" sends quite a different message to "Pavement cycling's not a problem around here IMHO"

Fair enough. It's a new one on me. I should point out that I don't particularly like internet acronyms and avoid using them wherever possible. It must be a sign that I'm getting old.

I had never seen it until recently and had to check it's meaning. I don't mind someone abbreviating something like In My Opinion as this is a common phrase and fairly easy to decipher but things like YMMV are lost on me (but I'm usually too embarrassed to ask and be seen to be out of touch!!).

I like it, it just seems a polite way of saying "lets agree to disagree and it's not worth disagreeing even if you want to".

I usually use YMMV in a literal sense, when talking about tyre mileages and the like, but don't use it often.

The one which has appeared recently, though, and has me giggling to myself each time, is WMV. That phrase appears in 37 different CC threads and 3 times just today!

Apparently White Man Van is a dangerous sort of vehicle, and may be considered almost as bad as its better-known driver, WVM.

I'd never even bothered to look up what it meant - I just assumed it was as pointless a cliche as IMO. And indeed it is! And, if I'm being pedantic, it isn't actually an acronym...
