You know those horrible supermarket BSOs?

Heard an interesting bit of info the other day.

You know those ghastly £80-100 Argos / Sports Direct etc non-assembled full-sus BSOs? Not intimately I'm sure, but you are familiar with them, right?

Guess how much the retailers buy them for.

So what's the trade price of a mid range tyre then?

Kind of makes me wonder why they bother building them at all... The scrap value of the metal would be a couple of quid, plus the price of components and shipping and there can't be much profit for the manufacturer, regardless of what they pay their employees. If it was a product that would result in huge orders for replacement parts or add ons I could understand it as a loss leader, but surely there won't be that many people that would buy one of these and actually wear them out?

When I started commuting four years I bought a Woolworths BSO, just as proof of concept and the fact I normally become bored of new things within a couple of weeks, it did it's job got me hooked, just gave it away when I decided it was time to buy a "proper" bicycle.

I did the coast to coast on a BSO from Littlewoods catalogue, no problems.
