Your rear light is not working :-D

Cycling back from a mate from training last evening, at circa 8:05pm a car slowed down to next to me,
"your rear light is not working!"
'I was tempted to say that's because its not switched on as it won't be sunset to 9:17pm and my lights come on a half hour before that in accordance with the law' (coincidently, being the sad person I am I'd looked before I left the flat).
Being non confrontational person I am though, I just replied "thanks"

How annoying. I guess if it was dark+raining it may have seemed like light up time.

That's what the large majority of motorists often say to me when I tell them that one of their lights aren't working;). Sometimes I suspect that they already knew and can't be bothered to do anything about it (different situation obviously since they should have working lights!).

Careful or bikes will have to have DRL's (Daylight Running Lights) soon.

Personally I have front and rear lights on all the time, little flashy ones. Anything to help get me noticed

Trouble is, flashy lights are only used by cyclists so motorists think "I can pull out in front of them, they're not going fast as they're only on a bike."

I'd rather have a solid front light than anything flashing.

I only use a flashing front if I'm in a well lit area, or on a gloomy day. At night I want to be able to see the road, rather than glimpses of road each time it flashes! Only if I'm worried about low batteries would I resort to flashing at night time.

Seems like he was politely telling you that you are not able to be seen very well in the light conditions and you are obsessed and going "by the book" rather than the actual conditions around you.
No one else decides if they need their lights on by checking the lighting up time.
Chap was concerned and may save your life.

Well that last part would get you noticed at any time of day!

Lol, I think he had some other agenda.
I was wearing a bright orange with green cycling jersey and my mate was wearinging Sunglasses it was that light.
I'm certainly not obsessed with going by the book, the light was there as always, I just felt no urge to switch it on

Flashy in the day, solid at night

Cracking a solo.
Back last year on an overcastish evening I was riding home, it wasn't dark just a little dim. I was approaching a single track section where I'll quite often pop my front light on. On this occasion I had the rear on too, a cyclist was coming towards me and as he went past he said "Your lights are on mate." I replied "Er, yeah I know", I expect he meant well.

I should have shouted "knob" after him, but wasn't witty enough to think of that particular response quickly enough.
