...that there's a good chance!! a condition that was operated on 12 years ago may well be back.

What would you do?

It is a bit obvious, I know, but wait and see what the situation fully is first and take it from there - medical science will have moved on, even in 12 years (in certain fields anyway).

At least if you have had previous experience then you'll have a much better idea of what to expect.

20 odd years ago I had testicular cancer. Had all the operations and treatments. Got better, eventually only had to go once a year. Then they said, "you've been coming here for years now, we might as well discharge you, have an x-ray and blood test and get on with the rest of your life".

Then I get a letter saying they found something new on the x-ray. They pod and poke for a couple of years, then say I have terratomas – ended up having 2 years of operations and chemotherapy, far worse than the original lot, but to their surprise get better and I'm still here.

Had I not had that last x-ray the tumours would have spread and probably finished me off, so I suppose my advice would be to get it checked and try to stay positive and I agree that 12 years might have seen a lot of improvements in treatments.

Wait and see if it IS back, prepare myself mentally in the event that it does come back... and try not to worry about it. Difficult, that last one, I know.

Depending on what the condition is (and I'm not asking), I might also make any preparations required in the event that is.

Do you have contact with a McMillan Nurse or similar?

They are experienced in these issues and can give support and advice.

My penny's worth is that all these conditions (even remission) tend to have a better prognosis if treated early. Denial is an understandable reaction, but get yourself seen and diagnosed.

Depends on what the "condition" is. What I would do for cancer is very different to what I would do for an ingrowing toenail. So impossible to say without more information but whatever it is best wishes for a recovery.

Without more info, probably the same as what was done 12 years ago. Maybe it will never come back again.
What "condition" is it??

Cancer. Can't be exactly the same as twelve years ago, that would be medical first.

As for what was done twelve years ago, I had it cut out. So there's no way it can be the same area affected.

Similar situation. Just recent tests are showing there's a "good chance!!"(ironic wording) its back.

The day after the operation two nurses scared hell out of me by wispering about what had been done as they changed shifts. I've got used to doctors & others in hospitals doing the same, wispering around me, but it was the first time nurses had done so.

The whispering really probably is just handover between staff to keep people updated- try not to let that worry you.

All I can say is get your tests and get checked out and see what if anything needs to be done.

Good luck.
