It once happened to the guy who fitted my kitchen worktops - a rag soaked in oil for treating the wood, caught fire in the back of his van. Luckily, he put it out quite quickly.

Immersing wood in boiling linseed oil was the treatment given to woodwork used on the Enfield rifle. It was dunked for some time and allowed to air dry. The result was a hard impermeable surface.

Some of the wooodwork we handle is 100 years old and has stood up well to the test of time, a couple of wars and mistreatment. The only damage is that caused by mineral oil getting into the wood and rotting it. We recover this by inletting new material.

Unfortunately the patina of 70-100 year old BLO is impossible to acheive using the original material. We have developed a treatment which allows us to fake it.
